  • Thank you for all this information, this will be very useful.

I'd like to know more about your faith, how do you live all this with the Lord? Here there are very few Christians who are doing Comic book and I'm one of the rare ones who are evangelical.

I will try to contact Ralph. We'll see if we see each other next year... I think the Lord is wanting me to do something in your part of the world and this would be great to meet other Christian comic artists.

  • I'll approach any issues surrounding translated editions when I'm ready to take that step, but thanks.

No, no personal contacts with these publishers...you'll have to get them the old fashioned way, either calling or emailing them and asking who's their submission editor. You'd be amazed some of the wonderful info you can get over the phone.

CCAS does have an exhibit each year and in fact I'm going to rely upon them to show off/sell my books this year (since this is the first year I've missed since 2004). If you'd like to check on having them market your books, contact Ralph Miley (who you can find a profile for on this site, or his email address is: ralphellismiley@verizon.net )

  • Thank you for all what you wrote!

Yes indeed you have to translate it first in French and present your books to participate to the prize. They know and appreciate me there, if you want I can put you in contact with them.

Thank you for the addresses of publishers, but the problem is if I don't have a personal contact, my email will go straight to the spam... Don't you have a contact?

I will wait the end of Comic con to contact them and apply for next year.
Concerning the CCAS exhibition at the convention, do you know who is the person in charge to contact?
And you did you already go there?

Thanks for your time, it's like a glass of water given to a thirsty person. May the Lord rewards you.
  • Well, I guess I'll have to wait till my books are translated into French before pursuing this convention's prize (hopefully sometime in the next year).

With the crazy economy right now, it's hard to recommend a good publisher...especially for Christian comic materials. If you can package it into a graphic novel format, you might try IDW, NBN, Thomas Nelson or Barbour (goggle them for contact info).

If you haven't gotten you credentials for San Diego, it might be too late. The website says they have closed registration for professionals, but it also posts this message:

If you are a First-time professional applicant, you may apply online. Please send your name, title, company, and address to proreg@comic-con.org. You will receive an email with instructions to apply online. Please DO NOT EMAIL your resume, verification materials, samples, or links. You must submit an online application first. You will receive instructions to submit verification materials BY MAIL after you have submitted an online application. You will receive a code to register online after your application has been processed.

This show usually sells out for attendees and pro's alike in the spring, so you might want to start working toward attending next year. They start to take applications for exhibitors and pros shortly after this show concludes. Along show you might want to consider in the U.S. is the next New York Comic Con. It isn't till October of 2010, but it will probably be the next biggest U.S. show after Comic Con Intenational (san diego). For info go to:

Doing Christian material in this country is definately kind of an "uphill battle" in that most comic retailers are leerly of that type of material and the Christian retailer is leery of comics and graphic novels...so you've always got to be "selling" yourself and your work to get exposure. I, for one, have been pretty successful at this, but it's a lot of work and most artists/writers either don't have the experience or desire to do "that" kind of work outside of just creating their books.

I personally have designed my books to be evangulistic and since they contain a Biblical adaptation of the passion story and Book of Acts, that's not too much of a stretch. But there is always room for all types of stories with Christian themes, whether overt or subtle.

  • Dear Bob,

That's great that you put a foot in the Angouleme festival (France is the less Christianized country of Europe).
There is the link for the Christian festival:
    http://www.bdchretienne.net/
but it is not in English, because they give prize only to comics translated in French. This is the email address:info@bdchretienne.net

I'm looking for an editor in the US (my first comic book is already translated) I think this could work great in your part of the world. Here, this comic book is a best seller of self-publishing. Do you have a idea, plan?

I want to go to the San Diego comic con, do you know how to do it and who to contact? (this is a comic book used to evangelism) and you did you go there?

How is it to be a Christian comic artist in the US? Did you try to do an evangelism comic book?

    Alain
  • Hi Bob,

You know, I have a character with your name, this is the Christian guy from the story, he always wears a yellow cap.
Congratulation for the drawings you put on your page, they are awesome!
I am a comic artist from Europe (more precisely Switzerland) I am often invited to Angouleme (the biggest comic festival in Europe, even perhaps in the world). Did you know that there is a Christian team who give their own prize (I got already 3), does it exist also in the US? (except the one from comic35 that I know already) for example at Comic con in San Diego?
I am very encouraged to find great artist like you. I look forward to hearing from you.

    God bless

    Alain
  • Thanks for the comment... was checking out your art as well... you've got a uniqe drawing style.
  • I will definitely write an overview. It will take a few days, but I want to tell you it was an awesome time!!!
  • Hey Bob,

You have some great looking artwork. I really like the video you put together for Eye Witness. Look forward to finding out more about it. God bless.
  • Hi Bob,

Your artwork has a good feel about it- I especially like the image of Saul on the horse being blinded by the light, as well as the picutres of Athens and Ephesus. Do you do the coloring on your books yourself?
    Peace
    Earnest
