Finally....something finished!!!

Yesterday was a landmark day!!  I finally finished a script for a 54 page graphic novel!!!

Granted, it's a first part of a long line of stories, so much so that the subtitle for it is "Prologue," but still, I finished it!!

My wife Mandy is looking over it now, looking for plot holes and inconsistencies and such.  Once she's finished, I'll get started on the artwork.  Really looking forward to it!!

I'll be posting some pieces of art as I finish, hoping that you guys out there can give me some pointers on how to improve.  As I've said before, the Lord has shown me that I'm never so great at anything that I can't learn from someone else.  And what better place to learn than among my brothers and sisters in Christ!!

So excited!! Praise God for his faithfulness!!

Back into the routine...

School has officially started for me this week. I haven't had any kids yet, but they'll be there on Monday. It's hard leaving my little buddy and beautiful wife to work all day, but I endure it because I want to provide for them.

Got some writing done yesterday and a little drawing done too. Oddly enough, even though I technically have less time to work during the school year, the structure of it actually helps me get more accomplished than in the summer.

Hopefully will have some new art to share soon, and maybe by this time next year I'll even have a book or two finished. We'll see.

How many times can you restart a project?

That's a question I've been dealing with lately.

If you poke around my art posted here, you'll discover a web comic that did for a short time called Outcasts.  It was an allegory of how traditionalism was making our churches incapable of doing what the Lord called us to do.  Then, after actually serving on staff at a church, I came to realize that the argument isn't so cut and dried, that there are things on the "nontraditional" approach that are just as paralyzing.  (As I said in my previous post, the Lord had a lot to teach me over the years.)  So, I went back and started to rewrite my outcasts story, giving it a more balanced view.  Well, in the process of writing, I came to realize that it felt like it was the middle of a story more so than the beginning of one.  I needed a prequel to establish the world I was creating these characters in.

Hence my most recent project, for now simply titled "MM."  I've drawn and redrawn the first page four times now, and the script that I started writing tonight is completely different from any of those four versions.  If I were to take all the time that I've spent starting this project over and over again, I might have been finished with it by now.

The good news, though, is that I'm very pleased with how the script is turning out now.  It took a while, but this project is finally starting to take shape in my mind.

FYI:  If you spend the time figuring out the details of your characters and the settings, getting to know them as intimately as you can and fleshing out every detail you can think of, then writing the actual plot becomes so much simpler.

Excited for where this is going, and what the LORD plans to do with it.

Keep soaring,

Branson

Getting back to it...

Wow....to be honest, I completely forgot that I had this until I received a message a little while ago. How is everyone?!?

I've been spending the past couple of years honing my skills a little, reading some books and trying some different techniques and things. I can definitely see improvement in my work, so praise God that he's working in me still.

Still nothing new on the project list. Still have a ton of ideas, several started projects, and too little finished ones. But, given all that I've learned in the recent months concerning art and story writing, maybe I didn't need to finish them because I still had some things to learn. I look back at my artwork from four and five years ago and think, "Wow...I used to think that was my peak!!" But now, I can see how God has matured me and taught me that, while I can be satisfied in what He does through me, I should never think that I have nothing new to learn.

Encouraged about what neurons are firing in the brain. Perhaps one day soon, some of them will see the light of day. Until then, I will continue to wait as God grows me and changes me into what He wants me to be.

Keep Soaring,
Branson

Finally settling on something...

Everyone knows I'm the world's worst at starting projects then never finishing. I've got Outcasts, Faith Noir, Simon Wraith (a comic I wrote 4 years ago), and now I've got story ideas for two more comics. They're popping in my head faster than I can create them. To be honest, it's kind of discouraging to have so many started projects and no completed projects.I think the problem is that I'm a one-man show. I'm trying to do the writing, pencils, inks, and coloring all on my own, and it's just too much for me to do in a reasonable amount of time...well, reasonable to me at least. I just get burned out too easily on one project and all too soon an idea for a new one pops in my head, so I start chasing that rabbit. I wish I could focus my energies on one project and finish it. Maybe it just requires more self-discipline on my part.I have, however, started a project that will most likely take the rest of my life to complete. I'm taking an Old Testament survey class right now, and it amazes me how epic the events in the Old Testament are. If they made a movie just about the books of King and Chronicles with the same budget that they gave the Lord of the Rings, I guarantee it would win a few awards just from how awesome the story is. So, after a little convicting, I've decided to graphically novelize (is that a word?) the Old Testament. I'm breaking the books up into individual issues, and if by some miracle I actually finish a book, I'll release it as a graphic novel. The goal is to have the entire Old Testament (or at least the historical parts of it) in graphic novel form before I'm too old to draw.I have no delusions of having something ready to roll in a short time. Chances are it will take most of my life, because there is so much in the Old Testament. And I'm not trying to make it rich on this either. This project isn't about making money or gaining prestige or any of that. It's about feeling convicted to give God the talents that he has given me. I'd ask that you pray that among all my other projects I have, this one wouldn't fizzle out. Pray that I would have the endurance to finish, and to finish well.Blessings to you all.

Executive Decisions...

So I've made some executive decisions about my projects. here they are:(1) I haven't heard a word from Dallas about drawing Outcasts Chapter 2. Not even a reply to my email. So I've decided that I'll go back to being the artist for it. It's a compelling story with a chance to reach people, and I want to keep it up. Of course, now that school has started for me, it may be a long time before I get it up and ready. But that's how it has to be.(2) Faith Noir is going to be shortened. Instead of having one 40 page story, I'm going to have two 20 page stories. The reason being so I can get a product out sooner, which will make me more likely to actually finish it.Please pray for me on these. I think both projects are important and have the potential to reach people for Christ. But I'm a one man show, and between school and trying to find a church position to serve at, I don't have a lot of time to work on them. Pray that God will either send a lot free time my way or someone else that can help me with these projects. Thanks for all the encouragement ya'll send.

The Story Continues...

So after some deep soul searching and discussion with secular interests, I've decided to keep Faith Noir as the title for my project. I was concerned that a name like that would make it hard to market to a secular audience, but it seems members of the secular audience actually enjoy the name. So, if that is what will make them want to read my book and in turn be exposed to the Gospel, then so be it.No word from Dallas about how Outcasts Chapter 2 is coming. I may end up having to draw it on my own after all. I'll give him a little while longer, but I really wanted to have something up by September.Work continues on Legends of Trinigon: Genesis. My co-author Dustin steadily writes on his half and I'm crunching out artwork. Hopefully we should have a finished product by Christmas. That's all for now. Until next time.

Spreading the love....

Okay so I am officially stretched to my limits project wise. I've got a first draft for Legends of Trinigon almost done, and work continues on Faith Noir. With that, plus a project I want to get started on for something my uncle wrote, I'm staying pretty busy. Unfortunately, that means Outcasts has taken a back burner. But thankfully, God provides. And old buddy of mine from high school said he was willing to do the pencils for me. So, thankfully, Chapter 2 of Outcasts will be drawn. It might not be a weekly thing like Chapter One was, but at least it'll be there. Stay tuned for more.Keep Soaring,Branson

So I've been busy the past few days. A friend of mine and I are in the process of writing an illustrated novel (as opposed to a graphic novel) and are trying to finish a 1st draft before he moves to West Virginia. Meanwhile, I'm trying to get artwork done for the 2nd chapter of Outcasts, which will eat up a lot of time. Not to mention I'm also trying to take care of a new dog and get ready for Seminary to start up in a month or so. So yeah, I've been busy, but I did manage to get a few pages drawn for my Faith Noir project. Tell me what you think!!!

Finally Finished....Moving on

I finished a script for a project I'm now calling "Faith Noir." I like how it turned out. I took a lot of the suggestions that several guys gave and incorporated them into the story. I've got supplies coming in the mail, so as soon as it gets here I'll be able to get started on artwork for it. I've never done a Noir story before, so this is going to be exciting. Hopefully, it'll say the message I'm trying to say without giving in too much to the dark elements of the genre. More later.

New City, New Beginnings....

I am now officially a Texan. We unloaded the last of the boxes today.....now to unpack everything!!! Needless to say this will put a slight delay on the web comic, but hopefully not too long of one.Got a lot of suggestions and insight from other writers about another Christian Noir Story. Thanks to all who gave their suggestions. I hope to have some stuff to post later.

Running an Experiment...

Ever since Sin City became popular, I've been intrigued by the noir style of comic books. I even rented a bunch of old noir style films just to get a feel for the genre. I also flipped through a few of the noir issues that Marvel has done recently. In researching the genre, I learned that most of the noir stories are riddled with sex, violence, drugs, alcoholism, and an overall depressing view on life. And of course, being me, the first thing I thought when I learned that was....Now how can I make it Christian?..........I have no clue if it's going to work out, but I do have an idea processing in my head....a way to incorporate enough of the elements that you get a noir feel, but not to the point that the material wouldn't be sellable to a faith-based audience.Something an old friend of mine once said about music.....it was God's creation, then Satan stole it and corrupted it. We need to try and take it back. I guess I kind of feel that way about comic books of ANY genre--superhero, noir, or otherwise. God created art and the minds that contribute to it. Then Satan got his hand in it and corrupted it to be something less than holy. Its our job as artists and writers who follow Christ to take it back and put it to its original use---glorifying God.So anyhow, I'll be working on that for a little while. I'm still spending most of my time and energy on the Outcasts Web Comic, because that is my first love. But later in the future I might have some character sketches and plot summaries to test out. Any thoughts on the matter? Can someone take something traditionally dark like the noir style and turn it into something God-glorifying? Comments or suggestions welcome.Keep Soaring,B

Just getting into things....

Hello all. I'm still very new to this world of comics and such. I've been a fan on comics since I was little, but have only looked into production of them recently. I've started an extremely small publishing company with my accountability partner, and we have some projects in the works. But I feel that we are mere pups trying to run with the big dogs. So I'm open to any advice anyone cares to give.I do have a web comic running. You can read it here. I also have a blog at here. Please feel free to visit them and leave any comments you care to.So yeah, I'm excited. I've only been a member for a few hours and I already feel welcomed. God bless you all!!Keep Soaring,B
