Developing a Virtual Indie Creator Con

For a long time now, I've had an idea for a virtual indie convention - an attractive site to easily search through various media and genres of indie creators and buy from them directly, to lessen the dependence on big corporations for entertainment and publicity.

Now, with the pandemic, small businesses are shutting their doors - perhaps forever. Conventions and other places for indie creators to gain visibility are shut down. These smaller creatives have run close to the budget for years now and they don't have much to fall back on.

I can't sit on this idea any longer. It is quite literally now or never. I'm going for it.

More is coming.

Take care, everybody.

May God bless you and give you strength and peace.

  • These guys are doing one this weekend https://www.facebook.com/StayHomeComicCon

    • Yeah, I've seen a couple - but they're on Facebook. There's no way to search for vendors by media, genre, maturity rating, digital vs physical products - all you can do is carefully scroll through a long, long, long list of people and comments and try not to lose your place. The platform simply isn't designed for it. But I will probably reach out to them once I have time! There is a daunting number of indie creators out there to try to link to.
      • theres a website, or there will be when it's on , then it's in categories.
        • Thanks - I followed them on Facebook. We'll see how theirs goes! All kinds of indie creators need more visibility, especially now. :)
  • Sounds like a huge project. I like the inclusiveness of the name indiegenxyz. Im wondering were there other online platforms that were already similar to what you imagined? It seems like you would need a big team to do this idea?
    • Yes and no and maybe... I've seen some other online cons but they are using Facebook groups to list everyone and that isn't searchable or easy to find. There are also some YouTube streams that are like the panels, which are fun but the links to buy the panelists' products are below that particular video, which gets buried. I haven't heard of another separate platform that's an online con.
The way I want to do it, yes it would need a huge team and a lot of money. The way I'm going to do it will be functional and pretty and one guy says it's feasible and he'll do it, but I'm not going to ask him to do it for free so I'm gathering funds now.
The main idea is searchability, and the big trick to pull off is minimizing what I have to host on my own platform. That will mean there's no way to monetize it so I'll be running it on faith and a tip jar.
I've had the name in mind for a long time! :) I was glad to see it was still available when I bought the domain.
  • I dig it!
  • This sounds like a great idea. If I had funds I'd help but, alas, I've been virtually out of work for a year now & I don't have any spare. Sorry! GOD bless
    • Don't worry about it - God will provide! You can help by sharing and using the hashtag #IndieGenXYZ to talk about it if you get the chance.
You can have a booth too! I should be able to link directly to your Redbubble store when it's built.
