this is my latest work, although I've had this idea around for like, 10 years! It just woundn't go away, so I've kept plugging away at it. I've always wanted to do a sci-fi and I like the drama of the characters in this story. About 5 years ago I did a lot of work and finished about a third of the story as an example to hunt down a publisher. I didn't get anywhere with it. later on I learnt a lot about the importance of the background image in Anime and I felt I didn't do any real 'set design' in my first attempt of this story. I had the idea that I could combine 3d images for backgrounds and I knew I had the ability to do it, and I haven't seen many people doing this out there besides -red star. (not that I read much comics compared to a lot of people) This is influenced by the Star Wars Manga a bit but shows a lot of my own tastes over the years and other manga I'd like to aspire to.

I've actually finished all of the inking for the hand-drawn characters but I still have heaps of 3d work to do- so it's probably not a viable way to work with comics- but I'm aiming on seeing it through and hoping to get it published and translated into Japanese one day.

  • thanks for the encouragement:)  another friend actually said the backgrounds don't blend that well but this is the look I'm going for.  I think there's a balance though between doing a 'quick comic' (especially under a lot of time constraints)- it's better to actually Finish a comic story than bite of too much and have your backgrounds looking great but never really finish the story...  having said that I need to devote some more time and finish this off :)

  • Backgrounds are astonishing! backgrounds are forgotten issue in most projects. But you seemed to have nailed it. They flow with your artwork and they dont look out of place. I am taking your lead and going to work on mine. Thanks for the inspiration.

  • The 3-D approach for the backgrounds works very well and blends nicely with the figures. It is also a great idea for a story. I look forward to seeing more as you work on the project. Blessings to you.
