Mechanical Dragon Concept

This is a concept a friend of mine did. The original was a very small ink drawing about 2x3 inches. Once I saw it I really wanted to try my hand at coloring. So, I did, the original colored version, from about 5 years ago just didnt look that great so over the last few days I did a re-color. Tell me what you think.

  • Awesome! i can't think of another word, except maybe "Awesomer"! I love your attention to detail. It really is amazing.
  • More bone like, I like that, good idea. I will have to play some more now that I have gotten some good tips. thanks.
  • sweet concept and idea... as far as the painterly look, I'd look at perhaps smudging the dark areas a bit more into the flats... but come back in with a bit of a burn to get the depth back in... play around with it. Only other thing I can think to make this baby POP... would be to lighten the yellowish overall tone to a more ivory like tone... bonelike even.

Awesome piece to play with... thanks for letting me know about it and sharing.
  • Wet edges, cool, I havent tried that yet, thanks for the tip. Yes, it could always use more shadows, that was the last thing I did so, it could have been done more for a more dramatic look. I may go back and tweak it some more...stay tuned.
  • WOW, I personally like it but if you want a painterly look, try using the "wet edges" in the brushes tab to see what you get, I think a few more edges of shadow would make it pop a bit more, but hey, there are no complaints from this peanut gallery ^^ *thumbs up*
  • Hey Michael, it didnt come out exactly like I wanted but I am fairly happy with it. I actually was wanting a more painterly look. I may, some day redo it in Painter to see what I can do different. I did use some airbrush, some brush, some dodge and burn. Yes, I always use layers and also channels. I also work in different modes while coloring, one being overlay. I also play with the opacity and flow. It kinda like an experiment until I figure out my style of working. Right now I am trying everything, ha ha. I have to give credit to my bro Paul for inking such a cool image to start with. I am going to try and do at least one image a week so stay tuned. I need the practice so that will be a good thing. The next one may be done in painter to try it out. I hope I answerd some of your questions. My advice for starting, just do it, play around with the tools thats when you get happy accidents.
  • I think the colors fit with the object. Great job, Lance.
