Black Jesus or Lack Jesus

I received an email recently from my pastor. Someone had forwarded him a link to a degenerate new television show planned by the Adult Swim network. The title of the TV show is Black Jesus.

The trailer is an serious assault against the body of Christ. More importantly, it attempts to pervert the dignity of our Lord and Savior, Jesus the Messiah.

Black Jesus or Lack Jesus

The creator of Black Jesus is listed as Aaron McGruder. He gained national fame through his cartoon 'The Boondocks'. I became aware of The Boondocks about ten years ago. It held some relevance as a commentary on politics and race. Although I didn't agree with everything McGruder was saying through the comic, there was enough thought-provoking content to make it a worthwhile read. Ten-plus years later, it appears that McGruder has forgotten how to think. It also appears that his success has him smelling himself. What smells good to him would send many a reasonable soul into a gagging episode. His portrayal of a Black Jesus lacks any resemblance of the real Jesus.

Dumbing Down

McGruder has obviously had plenty of help in dumbing down. The Adult Swim network, which produces Black Jesus, can more accurately be called, 'Porn Swim Animation' network. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to see that Adult Swim is engaged in building a bridge between the youth and the porn industry. Nevertheless, McGruder will one day stand alone before Jesus to answer for his involvement with this show. We must pray that he wake up and receive forgiveness before that day.

Why Swim With the Sharks When You Can Walk on Water with Jesus.

I saw a pastor on television, having just been shown the Black Jesus trailer, say, "We have got to use our craft to tell our stories." He went on to say, "...our creative media coming against their creative media, our truth coming against their absence of truth." While I appreciate his comments, it sounded as though we were not yet competing. Christian cartoonists, animators and other visual artists have been creating Christ-centered content for eons. One of our biggest challenges is not the ability or passion to create for Christ, but the support from our community. By support, I'm talking about financial backing, distribution and that attention from the body of believers. Here's a short list of sites where you can see some bright minds and anointed hands repping Christ.3448613957?profile=original

Live to See Another Day or Live to See ETERNITY

White Collared Thief in a Big Black Cadillac

My-Church-300x218.jpg?width=300The year was 1961. I was 12 years old, living in a small town in Kansas. I sat on pew with my Grandmother. Scattered throughout the sanctuary were a few other children, but mostly old folks. The Baptist pastor of our church had asked the congregation to bow their heads as he gave his end-of-sermon invitation as was his tradition every Sunday. I had heard his plea to ‘Come to Jesus’ many times, but this time was different. My heart began to pound and I felt as though someone was trying to lift me to my feet, but I resisted.

The following week, I thought a lot about standing with God. As Sunday approached, I had decided that I would answer the call to give my life to Christ.

I heard little of what the pastor said that Sunday. My focus was elsewhere. I waited, not in fear, but in anticipation of the altar call.  My heart began to race as he ended his sermon. In stead of asking us to bow our heads, he stepped over to an easel on which the rendering of our proposed new church was displayed. The pastor said that he had some disappointing news. “We have altered our plans to build a new church. Instead, we will remodel this one,” he remarked. Having said that, he abruptly left the sanctuary. The congregation sat silently, seemingly stunned. I looked to my grandmother who had sacrificed her time and what little extra money she could find to see the vision of the new church come to pass. Her head was bowed.

I rushed over to the window. I saw the pastor get into a brand new shiny black Cadillac and speed away.

In the following days of the new week, I thought a lot about Jesus and the decision I was prepared to make. However, as the next Sunday rolled around, I had made the decision to put the whole God/Jesus situation aside.

Saturday afternoon I told my grandmother, “I’m not going back to church.” I don’t think I could have said anything to hurt her more. I think she was fighting back tears, but she said not a word.

Live to See Another Day – Eternity

When I turned 17, I moved to Los Angeles. By the time I was 25 years old, I had come face-to-face with violent death on three separate occasions and ‘somehow’ survived.

I had not stepped inside a church since that Sunday when I saw the pastor drive away in the building fund money. It was now my mother who invited me. Now that I was an adult, I enjoyed her company. Nevertheless, I hated every minute of the church service. The pastor was preaching about being ‘buffeted’. To illustrate his point, he stepped to the wall behind the pulpit and began to bounce his large body against the cinder block. I thought that was comical; in a foolish sort of way.

I didn’t accept any more invitations to return to church with Mom. Now my older brother was inviting, no, pestering me to attend his church with him. We had been very close as children and into adulthood, but now his ‘Jesus’ fanaticism was pushing me away. So, I made him a deal. “If I attend church with you one time, will you promise to stop inviting me to church and preaching to me?” He was/is a man of his word, so when he agreed. I agreed.

There was a visiting minister at my brothers church that Sunday. My brother began to apologize even before the man had opened his mouth. The minister was different than any others I had seen. He didn’t preach a fiery sermon. In stead, he quietly told a story about a near-death experience he and his young daughter had just had. He calmly related how they were driving down a street I was familiar with. He said that an approaching car traveling at a very high speed lost control. It spun around several times in a direct collision course with them. The minister said that if he would have turned to the left to avoid the car, he would have driven into approaching traffic. If he would have turned to the right, he would have plowed into parked cars. With only a breath away from impact, he whispered ‘Jesus’. “It was a miracle,” said the minister. “It was as though a mighty hand grabbed the car, instantly halted its momentum, and removed it from our path.”

The minister calmly referenced some Bible verses as proof that God still performed miracles. He then invited anyone who wanted to know this God personally to raise their hand. My heart began to beat as it had when I was that 12 year child. It seemed as someone was trying to lift my arm. The feeling was so real that I looked to my brother to see if he was trying to help. His hands were folded in his lap and his head was bowed. This time, I didn’t resist.

Judge Not, and You Shall Not Be Judged

Touch not mine anointed, and do my prophets no harm.
Psalm 105:15

Thou hypocrite, first cast out the beam out of thine own eye; and then shalt thou see clearly to cast out the mote out of thy brother’s eye.
Matthew 7:5

Judge not, and ye shall not be judged: condemn not, and ye shall not be condemned: forgive, and ye shall be forgiven:

Steve Jobs, the celebrated CEO of not just Apple, but of corporations worldwide, has retired. Tim Cook, chief operating officer will now helm the company.

The company Jobs founded, along with tech whiz Steve Wozniak, earned a reputation in the public eye as the premier technology innovator of the 21st. century. Most notable among those innovations are the iPhone and iPad. But long before he was a household name, he was a star among the creative community over three decades ago.

Job's loyal legion of followers were enamored in part by the sexy computers Apple manufactured, such as the original Macintosh. The corporate world was slow to accept the Mac into their work environment. Many battles were fought by in-house designers in favor of Macs over PC's. I recall, as art director of a California corporation, the struggle I had to purchase Macs for my department. We settled on a compromise by putting both a Mac and PC in my office. As you can imagine, the PC collected dust.

Also highly favored by designers and other creatives was Apple's user-friendly operating systems. Those operating systems certainly came from talented engineers working at Apple, but its success could ultimately be traced back to the unique operating system known as Steve Jobs. Mr. Jobs had earned a reputation of being very meticulous, demanding and somewhat difficult to work with, but we who use his products are the beneficiaries of his high standards.

Jobs most recent public appearance was at the World Developer Conference in June. He appeared thin and seemed to move with some effort, nevertheless, he still commanded the audience in his signature jeans, tennis shoes and turtle neck. His presentation was that of a master showman and confident salesman.

We at ur-toast.com offer our prayers for Mr. Job's health.

Rembrandt and the Honest Priest

If some mysterious person left a precious gift for us, would we not likely give thanks to God for blessing us.

That must have been what an assistant priest of St. Nicolas of Myrna Church in Encino, California thought when he discovered an original Rembrandt drawing, 'The Judgement' in the church. After deeper consideration, he called police and reported the item.

The drawing, valued at $250,000, had been stolen from the Ritz-Carlton Hotel in Marina del Rey in an unguarded moment as it was being hung for an exhibit.

Authorities speculate that the crime was possibly committed by someone who did not have the connections to fence such a high profile work of art. In order to not get caught with the drawing, they disposed of it in the church. Neither the pastor nor others associated with the church are suspects.

There are several things worth noting about this case. First, that the pastor recognized the artwork as a Rembrandt. Secondly, that he was honest in returning the drawing.

One might think, of course I too would return it. However, have you ever received too much change on a small purchase and thought, "God is blessing me," as you slip the coins into your pocket and walk briskly out of the store?

Understanding Comics

A couple of excellent books about comics are, 'Understanding Comics' and 'Making Comics', both written by Scott McCloud. It should be required reading by anyone serious about the oft-unserious art of comics. I am fortunate that my library has them both, but if yours doesn't, you can get them online. I know that Amazon has them, and I'm sure other sites do as well.

McCloud also has another book, 'Reinventing Comics', though I've not read it. If you have, I'd like to know what you think of it.

What Is A Christian? Episode I

The recent tragic events in Norway remind us again that evil stalks the earth. It should be evident to all that the deranged man, Anders Breivik was under the influence of satanic forces bent on death and destruction.

Unfortunately, it seems that some misinformed members of the media would like to pass the blame of one sick man on to the innocent many… Christians. Breivik's stated in his manifesto that he did not have a personal relationship with Jesus. Nevertheless, the media continues to call him a Christian.

In the wake of such horrific events, people have asked, "What is a Christian?" or "Who is Jesus" or "Where was God?"

The cast of TOAST doesn't claim to have all the answers, but knows where to find them: the Bible does. They lend their voices to the discussion.
