Hi my name is Daniel. I have recently been producing a comic strip with a series of my own paintings. I am concerned that the ideas and story is hard to follow. I wonder if any one can help me with the coherence of my work. I want people to understand and be able to relate. I would like the ideas to be easily communicated.

Thank you Brien I can send you stuff...I am a painter initially and just exploring ideas. I produce individuals images and have found they are always part of a larger story. I find that the work is best explained with captions and as cropped images.....Perhaps you can help I am danielchuter@hotmail.com

Thank you Marcel...I have a heart for those returning to Christ and I paint with a prophetic group of christians here in the uk. So I paint images but it often turns out to be part of a sequence. So I have found the best way to explain my ideas is by making it into a comic. The story I am working on is called the rescue. I have a group of rescuers, could be christian workers in harvest,but I have made them into spacemen taking the idea that they travel literally to different planets in response to cries for help. This is taking the idea of people being very different and complex. I have a website....goldmina.net...I can send examples.

Check out "Understanding Comics" by Scott McCloud. That is a very insightful look at what makes sequential art effective, and why.
Also, pick up "The 5 C's Of Cinematography" by Joseph Mascelli if you are interested in what camera shots do what as far as visual storytelling is involved.
But more than that, just see why certain stories affect you certain ways. Why does the scene in "Glory" when Denzel is going to be whipped nearly choke me up whenever I see it? What makes the X-Men's Dark Pheonix saga by Chris Claremont and John Byrne one of the best epic super-hero stories ever told in comics?
Yes, because of the writing, but these are visual mediums. It is also because of the choice of shots, and pacing that enhance the whole written tale.
For me, I learned visual storytelling from movies first, then comics. There is a visual language to learn, but chances are you have already absorbed a lot of it unconsciously if you're a fan of these art forms.
It's fine to be experimental, but without the basic bones of solid visual principles to build your story on, well... what you want to say may never make it out of the way you are trying to say it.
