I've stopped eating for Feburary....

I'm not calling it fasting since I'm not bragging or anything I'm just desperate and nothing else seems to be connecting me with God. So starving may also starve any or all other sinful cravings I have and my probelems will go away much quicker! My papa said not eating would make me less focused than I already am but I has a poor record (though not as porr as my mom's) and I'm willing to gamble that as well (mostly I want to be talked out of this right now)... Thank you all for your prayers over me anyway!

*Reminder: this is not really a fast; If I did decide to fast I wouldn't touch the internet for a month which would probably drive me crazy ...

  • Remember fasting is about feeding the spirit not the body. you must substitute reading the word for food. If you don't imerse yourself in scripture and prayer. Then you fast will be useless. at the very least substitute reading during meal times. I'd also recamend searching a passage that speaks to you such as David or Phineas. Whatever God lays on your heart. then don't just read it but study it out. Read some commentaries, different translations, put it in context politicaly, spiritually and chronalogically. Get to KNOW that section of the scriptures intimately. and then let it speak to you.
  • I've tried fasting myself but couldn't last a day. Your Dads right! Not eating will make you lessed focused.

There are other areas to fast from. ( I'm not saying you won't be successful but a month IS a long time! )

Hmmm....Why DON'T you fast from the internet? Alot easier and safer than starving yourself. Remember, you fast only to feed on God, his word, presence and will. Time not on the computer could be time spent doing devotionals. Your also a musician, so give those talents up to God and let him speack through you in music.
Calculate how much time you spend online. What else could you get done in that time? More drawing, since you want to use that talent for God someday?
Quality time with Papa? Read the bible together?
Think about doing it for 3 days. And if successful, 3 days a month.
But don't go in it without making a plan on how to spend the extra time.

Heh....I should follow my own advice.
  • My friend,
I would address you by name, but I dont know if you would appreciate that. I'm going to pray for you. I dont really know what else to say. I really think you ought to seek some serious counsel when it comes down to these types of things. I wouldn't totally discourage it, but if I were you, I would ask myself if it would be in my best interest to fast right before I have to take midterms. If you are truly serious about finding some resolve to whatever is going on in your life, I would speak to God about it, (who, by the way, knows exactly what's going on with you). But if that doesnt seem practical enough for you, speak to your pastor, and maybe he can give you some guidance.

I hope all works out for you,
    Levon Pelt
  • ...dang. I forgot all those medications requiring something else in my tummy besides water so it won't get upset with the pescriptions....
  • Okay, long-term fasts can be unhealthy, but they also *can* be spiritually helpful, so...

    1) Confer with your pastor about this IMMEDIATELY and follow his advice!

    2) If you do go on an extended fast (anything longer than a couple of days,) check with your doctor - a doctor will certainly recommend against fasting, but you need competent medical oversight to remain healthy at any rate!

    3) Drink water - LOTS! Normally we should drink "8 glasses a day" or something like that, but when fasting you should drink a LOT more, like over a gallon a day - it will be a discipline you have to force yourself to do, but it is physically very important.

    4) For any sort of fasting to be spiritually effective, remember: it's not the "putting off" (not eating) part of the spiritual discipline alone which helps - it's also the "putting on" - using that "eating" time and energy which is now freed up for prayer, meditation and study (both of Scripture and of spiritual writings such as the Church Fathers and so forth...) Again, BE IN SUBMISSION TO THE PASTOR GOD HAS GIVEN YOU for more specific direction!

Above all, BE HEALTHY! I've known people who have fasted for thirty, even forty days without ill health effects - but it is EXTREMELY DANGEROUS and must be done with proper medical and spiritual supervision, else you might find yourself in worse physical and even spiritual condition come March!

    I'll be praying for you!

    Cordially,
    Calix8
