Discussing the very real possibility of a convention devoted to Christian fans and pros who enjoy comics, science fiction, fantasy, gaming, costuming, steam punk and everything geeky.
Convention Theme Song
Erik Pineda said my new song sounds like a theme song for a Christian superhero. https://soundcloud.com/jotham-david-parker/truth-shortish-edit You guys should use it (or the longer original version) for the convention somehow. I think it fits really well. Or you can just rock out to it while you're drawing. Either way, enjoy!

I think Don Ensign proposed "GOLGOTHA CON", which I think is good because Golgotha is where Jesus was crucified, and because it sounds cool, having the word "Goth" in it.
I think "GOLGOTHA FEST" sounds equally good.
One of our tribe, Jesse Hamm, did a comics feature called "HappyGoth" some years ago. Tie-in!
Jesse it was who argued for "Xn" as a shorter way to type "Christian."
"Xn" makes sense. Just as "Xmas" hails back to the medieval Christian tradition of writing "X" to denote "Christ" when signing letters and so forth, so "Xn" has the same precedent.
And the "n" suffix terminal abbreviation is common.
So "Xn" to denote "Christian" makes sense both from a conservative or traditional standpoint of written language, and also from the modern NetLingo standpoint of chat acronyms & text message shorthand. And it is well-established. "XN" is already current and accepted.
Hence my first proposal of "XN-CON" or "XN CON" when this convention idea was first posted here. What would people say upon seeing it? EX-EN Con, I suppose, just like when folks say Ex-mas when they read Xmas. EX-EN Con. Ha-ha. ;-)
Hmm...here's some comic con name ideas:
CreatiCon
NerdCon
GeekCon
P.S.-These are all my Dad's ideas, haha, so...I'll be getting back to you on my own. By the way, what do you guys think of using an acronym of some sort?
please connect with the Gideon conference. They may have some ideas and point you in the right direction for planning.
I will posted about once a month the progress of the proposed convention.

Comic Con Proposal Update
Geeky Guys for God are definitely interested in getting in on the ground floor of this project.
Nate Butler’s ROX35 Media Inc. and Geeks for Christ are prayerfully considering partnering with the CCAS
Pastor Price of Crenshaw Christian Center will be getting a proposal letter.
At the monthly CCAS meeting in December, several people will be responsible for looking the prices of several items; Ralph Miley will be searching at several venues that will include schools such as Chapman and Biola, churches, and lodges, Holly Knevelbaard and Clint Johnson will be looking at prices for post cards that advertise the event, Clint will be developing graphics and looking at the price for walkie talkies, Holly will be looking at registration apps. Eric Jansen is going to contact someone associated with the 168 Film Festival event.
Other necessities are insurance, a kid’s zone, and requirements and restrictions for cosplay were items that were discussed.
A contest to come up a name for the event. The winner would get a free registration and grab bag that would include comic books and graphic novels from various publishers. This will be posted on the CCAS site.
Possible Spotlight guests could include Gene Yang, Nate Butler, and Doug TenNapel.
For the venue that would accommodate a dealer’s room, two rooms for panels, and a green room that would be for staff and guests.
The prices for civic center range from $1,200 to $2,800.
Carl Borg made the proposal for an online con and D.L. Maffett offered to host a How to on Manga Studios panel. Hailey Summer Galloway, one of the youngest members of the CCAS has offered to help fund raise.
I've given Ralph some information already, because I'd rather not have a discussion like this one in a public form. Don, if Ralph hasn't forwarded my emails to you, let me know and I'll send them to you.
One issue that hasn't been addressed here is that the proposed convention would be in addition to not a replacement for CCAS' presence at the conventions we currently have tables and panels at. It is important to have a Christian presence and outreach at these secular events.
Before we get to far afield just want to comment on a couple of things. Bryans thanks so much for the Echo Conference suggestion. I'm sure we can learn a lot from them.
Looking over their web site briefly to idea of the different between conferences and conventions came into my thinking. When I attend a conference I'm there usually search information of one kind or another. If i buy stuff there it's probably going to be books or CDs or DVDs or some other info laden media. A convention is a bit different. A good comics convention has programming (info) but it operates on several different levels. Some attendees make costumes and hang out with friends, some go with the intent of buying some special back issues, or toys or whatever. Others stand in long lines to get autographs from some media celebrity. Some may go just to watch old movies or amateur movies produced by locals. Some go to the big conventions to show their artwork to prospective employers.
I'm not saying that a Christian Convention can meet all those needs or desires but they can do some of them. Once again great suggestion.
Keep me posted on this as well. I am interested in such an event. For me, the question is whether or not I can come to such an event this year. Coming out with a new graphic novel this year and hoping to be able to attend some new cons. Just not sure YET how far I can travel. Would be interested in traveling with others from the Great Lakes area to save money.
keep me posted. I want in and am willing to help out. Get with Art Aryis from Kingston Comics he was trying to do something similar.
