this week's funny funny

Yo:

I'm not too floored with how deadshot turned out in this comp, his mid section looks dislocated to me.  But it's drawn so I figured I post it.

The caption is: "Bernie won best costume at comic-con last summer, now he thinks he can't miss."3449076969?profile=original

  • Landon, I think you could improve with some techniques to help loosen you up - just would make your work that much better. I can see you're working hard to make things work and be clear - but it seems like your fighting with yourself. And this is one of those things you might not even be aware of. I went through this too at one point, until I had an aha moment which then broke through and improved my work dramatically.

This last post is much improved, though there are still some quibbles. But at this point, it's neither here nor there - finish up this puppy and move on to the next.

  • Hi Martin:

Move forward with what?  the cartoon is meant to be a one panel strip.  I traced over it and re-positioned Deadshot's legs using the same technique I started with, the hunters in the background are there for comedic value so they weren't changed that much.

  • Landon, did you do a re-draw? Would love to see it - I also have some suggestions to help you start moving forward.

  • What Martin said if you use guide lines for your sketches you more than likely won't need to flip ur image to get your characters more symmetry.

  • Landon, are you putting in your skeleton or under-drawing in first? Or a motion line? It feels like the image starts with the detailed head, and works it's way from the top down. Starting with details is one of the quickest ways to lose the form of a characters shape.

Below is a JPG, that I hope helps:

Step 1: get the basic skeleton - of head and upper body sitting on on the legs the way you want.

Step 2: Now add the skeleton arms in the position you want

Step 3: Use the skeleton/structure to now add all the details. IF you have to "draw through" an arm to make sure the torso looks right, do it. You can always go and erase those lines.

Add a horizon line to your images - this will help to "place" your characters in a more convincing manner.

  • Flipping the image, and you correcting the flow, adjusts the image so that it's not skewed towards the hand you're drawing with. You're pulling it back towards the middle ground. Then you just flip it back and further refine the image off your corrected(flipped) lines. So it's like you're gonna be drawing the image at least three times on regular paper, drawing digitally it'd only take two times. Believe me you'll be happier w/ the end results of doing this exercise and eventually you'll get to the point of where when you do flip it over it won't look different or alittle off to your perception.

  • Alika:

But I don't understand why you flipped this image.  What does that do for flow?

  • @Landon that flow you're talking about, not the accessory piece, that flow you're seeing that's off, fix that. The symmetry you're eye's working out will even your work out. Once you're done turn it over again and trace the reworked image and your work should be much better.

I would put a vertical line from the top of the head down to try and straighten up the figures. See where the crotch is compared to center of the head, line it up.

  • He's just a bit skinny through the midsection. Look at his back. If you draw a diagonal line from the top of that ammo armband to the bottom of the belt, that will give you a rough idea of the proper proportion. Right now he's a big bulky guy as far as his chest, head, and arms, but he's way skinny for the rest of him. There's just the front of his stomach there - at this angle he needs his side to show, too.
