  • How would you define "above you"?

Right now I am writing from my day-job cubicle. I'm sure there is someone one flight above me. What should I say about that person? Well... I can say with almost 100% certainty that person has 2 arms, 2 legs, and a head. (I should say that I'm 100% certain about the head. I'm only reasonably certain about the arms and legs.)

In the hierarchy that is corporate life the one who is above me in authority is my boss, and I can say without a scintilla doubt that not only does he have a head and all the regular appendages, but he his a fair man.

But if we are talking spiritually, who is not above me?

"...But whoever wishes to become great among you shall be your servant, and whoever wishes to be first among you shall be your slave; just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many."

So, what have I good to say about mankind? Lots, I guess, but unfortunately one of my favorite lines from Dostoyevsky's "Notes From Underground" comes to mind- The best definition of man is: a being that goes on two legs and is ungrateful.

(Maybe it was the two legs thing that brought it to mind.)

Yet, as ungrateful as man is- as I am- I must endeavour to hold all men above me, and to serve them as He would serve them.

Thanks for the thought. A good way to start the day.
