Oboe Jones

I don't know if any of you have heard of this, but there was a strip called Oboe Jones created by Kevin Frank, which ran in the late, great Cornerstone magazine from 1985 to 1998.

I discovered it in the early 90's. It was my first introduction to Christian comics.

At the time I was working in comics professionally, I had just gotten saved, and the wife and I headed out to Bushnell, Illinois to attend the Cornerstone festival- 4 days of amazing Christian music of all kinds, great lectures on theology, cultural issues, and apologetics, and meeting people from all over the world.

Cornerstone was fantastic, and we attended about 6 years running (until we had kids), but alas, the festival is no more. This year was the last.

Anyway, Kevin Frank was there, as he was a member of JPUSA (Jesus People USA) who put on the festival.

I loved the strip. It was funny, yet able to deal with serious issues like homelessness, abortion, and media bias. And I even had a minor correspondence with Kevin for a bit. (He's a good guy.)

Anyway, Oboe Jones was walking some new paths at the time in the world of Christian comics, so I would suggest you giving it a read. Here's the link for the first strip of the series if you want to go in order-

But this one was one of my faves. I thought it handled a very serious subject in a very real way-

   Good stuff. Thought I'd share.

  • I am definitely familiar with Oboe Jones.  I have a graphic novel of the collected works.  I love Kevin Frank's work with this strip.  I highly recommend it.  I do like the way he tackles some serious that confront the Christian community.  The one dealing with pornography is especially good.
