CHRISTIAN COMIC ARTS SOCIETY :: A NETWORK OF CHRISTIAN FELLOWSHIP FOR COMICS FANS, PROS, AND AMATEURS

I'm this close to qutting.

All I did was save apic to my fav's and i got this MSG from the artist..

I noticed that you Faved this piece : [link] into a folder Named Stuff To Color. You do not have permission to color any of my work and did not ask for permission. If you do so, since you didn't bother to ask first, I will report you to the Admins on DA.

My Response:

Wow, that's a great way to make friends..FYI, I always ask before i colour anything if you took the time to look through my gallery, you would see that instead of jumping the gun and threating me.....I will remove it from my fav's. With an awesome attitude like your's you should go far in this line of work... Have a nice day!

I am in the wrong?. I have never coloured anything without asking first, All i did was save it to my fav's so i could find it easy later.

I am just about done, I  have had enough, Maybe i need to walk away from this and go flip burgers and Mick D's :(

  • Sure, I'll take a look see, I'm highlander0423 on DA.

  • i'm working on a lineart for a friend on dA to color just because... you can color it too if you want :D

  • interesting.  Yeah, don't waste time trying to become Hokage.  Just enjoy what you enjoy.  Have fun my man.  Life is too short.  It is wise the path that you are choosing though, with trying to find work with something practical.  To get the bills paid.  So you are on the right track.

Now about the other guy.  Everybody BITES.  Everybody takes from everybody.  Even Jim Lee.  Let the first one who hasn't taken from someone else be the first to cast the first stone. It's called reference.  People take for inspiration and all sorts of other things, so at the end of the day if you are not getting money for it, then the other person shouldn't catch a heart attack.  It's all about making money.  If you are a colorist, and you don't draw. But you need to build a portfolio then you want to show off and do your best by coloring stuff that inspires you.  As long as you are not getting paid for it then it's legit to me.

  • Donald, color it and then send it to him :-P

This is what i am doing now myself, I do get permission before i even colour it. This person was just being a wiener. Also if theses ppl do not want us to colour or ink their stuff, they should put that in the discrib of the piece. You are posting it on an ART SITE after all!.

  • Hey guys,

Thanks, and your right, knowing i colour now for fun take's alot of stress and pressure off me. I can colour when i want, and how i want. I knocked on a few doors today when it come's to getting back into the IT field, I can't wait to see which one GOD opens for me :)

    Don

  • Yeah drawing as a hobby is great because it gives you something to look forward to after work :-).

  •    I am so sorry to hear of your loss. My heart and prayers go out to you and your family.

As for coloring... so few people in this world know what they LOVE to do. Maybe it is wise to leave the competitive nature of competitions and business out of it. There's something to be said for that.

I discovered that after years of working as a professional illustrator, and drawing other people's ideas, I had grown to dislike drawing. The one thing I was good at, the one thing I must have loved as a child (though I cannot remember loving it) had been soiled by being forced to draw those things I had no attachment to, and at all crazy hours of the night.

Some guys can retain their passion. I couldn't, and only now that I am working on my own stuff on the side am I beginning to enjoy it once again.

So, all that to say... I pray you never stop coloring, and I pray that the Lord will give you eyes to see opportunities should you decide to pursue it professionally... or if you don't. Either way, I will pray that you will use this gift to His glory.

       Peace to you, sir.

  • Well i am hopefully gonna get back with the company i worked with before Sophia got sick I used to install computer and POS systems for IBM. I just sent them an email, I hope to hear from them tues....Its was part time, but at least it was something, I will do colouring as a hobby only....Maybe with the small out of the house computer shop i am running i may be able to make a decent income...Doing art as a career was a pie in the sky thing, I had a feeling it wasn't gonna be enough.....

  • I didn't start out wanting to make money with my art. I started as most of you just drawing for the pure joy of watching something come to life on the page. Then someone i know suggested i try making t-shirt designs. So i tried that for a bit with limited sucess. I found drawing to be stressful because everything has to be perfect, I use to trace some of my work because i wasn't good enough to draw them, I had ppl go out of their way to point this out to me and OTHERS. when i had already told them i did trace. So i gave up of drawing altogether and focused on colours, I have only been at colours for about 7 months.

I colour because i love it, I only noticed my love for it while colouring with my 6 year old daughter, and i saw how mine looked and said hey, that's pretty good for only using crayons :) after a few months of practice I started thinking i could do it as a pro.....

It's not just this guy that has me re-thinking my choice, I have entered many colouring contests on DA and have never placed, even thou in my opinion mine looked nicer or technicaly better...

I will never stop colouring, I love it to much, and i sacificed alot to get my Cintiq....But i am re-thinking the whole colouring as a pro, I think there is just to much stress and pressure. The last couple years has been very tough for us, losing our daughter to cancer was harder then i can put into words, So i DON'T need anymore stress.... SO for now, I will colour because i love it....:)

Thanks for all the advice and replies, Without God's grace I wouldn't have made it through the last 2 years.
