CHRISTIAN COMIC ARTS SOCIETY :: A NETWORK OF CHRISTIAN FELLOWSHIP FOR COMICS FANS, PROS, AND AMATEURS

Hey!

Hey all,

Just stumbled across this website the other day - and I'm pretty excited to have found such a big group of like minded individuals! I've been working on a Christian themed comic series for some time now myself, and I'd love to share it with you guys, and maybe get some thoughts and feedback.

If anyone is interested, you can read my in series-in-progress, Rust Angel, over at http://www.wowio.com/rustangel . As a side note - I'd encourage anyone with ebooks to look into wowio as its a pretty sweet site for uploading books and comics.

Let me know what you think!

-Matt

  • Matt, awesome series idea. Love it. Keep it going.

  • This is a phenomenal amount of work for a year!  Really creative storytelling with protagonists that have gripping stories and challenges, and engaging dialogue.  You've done a great job of leaving unsolved situations and characters such as the watcher and Celeste; it had no trouble holding my interest for four issues!  Is Rust Angel a life goal for you or a stepping stone?

  • Hey guys, thanks for the feedback! I've been working on this for about a year now - I can't really put as much time as I'd like into it so each issue takes about 3 months to put together.

Sven, I'm really glad you pointed the somewhat revisionist line I took with Lot's wife's death. I have a lot of very close atheist friends, and some of the biggest questions I hear have to do with how a perfect God could allow terrible things to happen to innocent people. I imagine Celeste taking a similar stance, as like us, she doesn't ever get to see the whole picture from God's perspective, and a lot of Old Testament stories portray some brutal situations. One of the main visions I have for the series is to try and get across that our God is a perfect and loving God, even if some events seem messed up and meaningless in the short term.

I'm hoping that maybe as Celeste starts to come around, maybe some readers who don't look up and see the same loving God we do can gain some perspective as well. After all, thats what its all about!

  • Very good storytelling here. It's unfortunate that none of the members here knew of your series since it is so engaging.

Personally, I have always had a problem with Christian comics about angelic warfare and superheroes. Nevertheless, I appreciate it as a frame, as a tool for addressing the Biblical stories you've done so well. The convention of having people as walking shadows is fascinating to me as well.

I find your choice to have Lot's wife destroyed by divine accident interesting as well - if not somewhat confusing. At first, I thought after reading that that you were re-envisioning the Bible stories, and given Celeste's disdain over the destruction of Sodom, attempting to critique the Bible and Christianity. I saw you as a non-believer exploiting Old Testament stories and changing them for the sake of a good story (how some authors will sometimes use Greek myths to write contemporary fiction (Lightning Thief, etc.)) and for the sake of criticizing the Bible. But then, Joseph's story seemed to stay true to the essence and substance of the narrative.

Whatever the case, I cannot wait for the next issue!

  • Good read. I like the creative interpretations you have for angels and the spiritual world. And the way you weave in people and stories from the bible. How long have you been working on this?
