Coloring Comics

When coloring comics for print.  Does anyone have some really good advice.  I'm coloring my book for the first time ever and I'm using photoshop.  The reason I'm asking is because I don't want to have to go back and make corrections.  Like for instance if printing you can't use RGB.  And how do you make superpowers have the glow.... any tricks.  I'm using photoshop elements 9.  Or a website that teaches how to color comics.

  • Yeah... that's always tricky. It all depends on the quality of your screen.

Usually the difference isn't that significant. You may want to try printing some stuff out on a decent printer just to give you an idea, but generally it may be a bit darker. Just a bit.

But then again, keeping things in layers will make for easy adjustments!

  • Thanks my man.  One last question... How do you know if what you color on the computer screen is what you are going to get in print?  Because the computer screen is lit up and bright, but when it's time to print will it come out darker?  So does that mean I need to make it brighter before print to balance it out?  Or does it print as is?

  • You can still achieve some very nice "glow" colors using CMYK. They won't have the neon quality of RGB, but you can enhance that by what you set the colors up against.

Be sure to work at 300dpi. Nothing smaller. And I would recommend working at least 50% larger than print size. (Reducing the image down to print size helps all the little imperfections to disappear.)

Also, when I work I have a layer strictly for flat colors, and I work with shadows and highlights in their own layers. This makes tweaking colors much, much easier. Keeping all your colors on one layer is a potential headache in the making.

The rest will just come to you as you progress! Enjoy!
