THE WALKING DEAD...

I am often critical of secular television being shallow and ungodly. (Don't get me started on shows like TRUE BLOOD or THE VAMPIRE DIARIES.) I think that most television programming is preventing people from concerning themselves with the things of God. And I think television is something that some people use to fill the emptiness in their souls.

I don't watch a lot of television. What I do watch on a regular basis are things like Fox News, SID ROTH'S IT'S SUPERNATURAL, SUPERNATURAL (different show as the one previously mentioned), JOHN HAGEE TODAY, and IN TOUCH WITH CHARLES STANLEY. (I do miss things like NOT A FAN and DRIVE THRU HISTORY.)

Still, I do very much enjoy THE WALKING DEAD television series. Honestly, I don't think that THE WALKING DEAD is either this or that in regards to Christianity. There are some Christian characters on THE WALKING DEAD. There is violence, as well, but mostly to walking dead things. I could do without some of the salty language, though. From a Christian perspective, I don't think that THE WALKING DEAD is either good nor bad. I could be wrong, though.

A friend sent me a link to an article about THE WALKING DEAD from a Christian magazine website. Honestly, I don't think that THE WALKING DEAD has "a deeper message" to it. My understanding is that (co-creator) Robert Kirkman is an atheist.

Anyway, here's RELEVANT Magazine's ("God, life, and progressive culture") article, "The Deeper Message of 'The Walking Dead'"...

  • I think that one can find deeper messages (even Christian symbolism) in many secular movies that the producers never meant to be there.  A Christian can see from a perspective that nonbelievers just don't catch (until it is presented to them).  I'm reminded (in the 17th Chapter of Acts) of what Paul saw in one of the idols in Athens.  The Athenians never meant that idol to represent anything except one god that they had left out in the multitude of (supposed) gods that they worshiped.  Paul (on the other hand), saw how the One True God had gone before him and paved the way for the Athenians to receive The Gospel.  I think that God still works in much the same way today.

  • This topic and article has made quite the buzz on my Facebook page…

  • There are deep messages both intended and unintended in The Walking Dead, but I didn't see what the article wrote as being anything deep.
