Comic Book & Graphic Novel Book Club

A few of us discussed the idea of having a online book club, a comic book/graphic novel book club to be more specific. I'd like to kick this off this month and our first book will be 'The Book of Revelation Graphic Novel'. I'm going to wait to set the date/time until I hear from those wanting to participate what day during the week works best. Looking to do this the week of Feb. 17th - 23rd. Wanting to keep things simple, so if you want to participate just let me know, no need to commit to a book club right now, just getting together to discuss this awesome book. I'll wait a few days to get a sense of who's interested and what day seems to work best for the most people. Finally format, I'm thinking that I'd like to try to do this on Google+, using the google hangout.3448612538?profile=original

Inker

If you're looking for an AWESOME Inker, I HIGHLY recommend Mostafa.  He's worked for Marvel, Image, and more and I was very lucky to have him work on my project.  He's available for work, please check out his work on his deviant.art page.  Even if you don't need an Inker now, keep him on file for when you do.  Cool guy and very professional.

We the Audience

wanted to share these thoughts with this community for discussion.

I find that as a fan of christian comics (using the term as an umbrella to the genre, including graphic novels, bible based works, faith based works which may or may not be explicitly Christian, and even mainstream projects done by Christian creators).

The comic book industry is a relatively small market, and christian comics is one of the smallest of the small in that market.

Yet as creators we can spend so much of our time searching for this small market. We search and find out what we already know, there isn't a large market.

The reality is that we are the audience, and we need to grow ourselves.

So let us consider how how to build our audience.

I can think of several people that I know who might enjoy comics, but don't currently read comics. So what is keeping them from becoming fans of comics?

A few obstacles that I've observed.

Foremost seems to be that no one is introducing and inviting them try comics. I think that getting into, or getting back into, comics is intimidating.

We need to be the ones inviting those we know to read comics.
Having someone listen and recommend titles to a newcomer based on their interest would do wonders.

Another obstacle is that money. There can be a hesitancy to go out and spend money to find out if they like comics.

Lend out books, give books as gifts.
The public library often has many great graphic novels available and can be a free way of introducing others.

Start a graphic novel/comic book club.

A once a month meeting where we read and discuss graphic novels sounds awesome to me. This can also be done online (chat, google + hang out, etc).

Support & Promote other creators.

There are several reasons to celebrate other creators success, but the success of any christian creators builds our genre as a whole and thus benefits us all.

A Review of 'The Book of Revelation'

3448612230?profile=original

The key to the brilliance of this book is summed up by Matt Dorff's adapter's note,

<'None of the pre-20th century classic art based on the book of Revelation included reaction shots of John.  That simple juxtaposition of an image depicting an event an event and an image depicting an observer observing the event is the visual key to this version of Revelation.  This technique provides an emotional cue to modern readers and invites them to explore what John was feeling as the vision unfolded'.

Inspiration

I like to save images that I find in other books as a reference material. Here's one example. I wanted to try to capture the tenderness of this moment, as well as have the reader begin to care about the protagonist. Check out the line work in the hair on the inked version.

Avengers Alternate Ending?

So I'm watching the previews for the upcoming dvd of Avengers and of course am excited about getting it.

But since they keep advertising it, and they keep showing sequences from the final fight sequences, I thought of an alternate ending.

What if the Avengers seeing that they were overpowered, retreated to form an underground resistance against the invading army.

Maybe if Marvel took a page from DC and made thousands of alternate universes you could do this ;)

What Do you Recommend?

What comics/graphic novels would you recommend to a friend who had interest in getting back into comics?

Off the top of my mind I would say, in no ranking order; Batman Hush, Superman Birthright, The Walking Dead, Y the last man, (Samson the Nazirite of course :) ... but I'd like to hear what this group would recommend.

Anyone going to Comic Con?

Last year during comic con I told myself, 'Next year, you'll go next year'.  I was looking forward to it all year, but it's not going to happen this year.  Hopefully next year.  I'm wondering if there is anyone who is going to comic con this week be interested in taking some copies of Samson the Nazirite to help promote?  Thinking that if someone has a booth or space they can display there as well.  Maybe even sell a few copies or take order for copies?  If interested let me know and we can discuss details & compensation.

Samson the Nazirite # 1is ow up on Graphicly! You can read the first 10 pages in the preview! (A 10 page preview, what that's crazy!:) I recommend reading it with the 'View Mode' option. It's very cool. With View Mode selected when you click on 'Next' it will move you intuitively to the correct panels and text.

Hey CCAS family,

Just wrapped up the extended first issue of 'Samson the Nazirite', went from 22 pages to 38.

I'm giving away a free copy to the first 25 people who contact me.  (Please send your email so that I can email you link).

What's catch?  Of course there's a catch :)  But it's easy.  If you sign up to get a free copy I simply ask that you do one (or all 3) of the following;

1.  After reading complete a very short 1 page survey.  It's very short, 10 questions, 9 are multiple choice so you can knock it out in about 60 seconds.

2.  Word of Mouth - We'd like to get the word out about this project.  If you can let your friends know, like us on facebook, post us on your website, whatever, just something.

3.  Pass it Forward- We give you a free copy, in return you purchase a copy from the website for a friend.  (Hopefully in turn they pass it forward as well)

Again we just ask that you do at least 1 of the 3.  Visit the website for more details on the project;
