Encouragement for Amateurs

Hey, guys! I'm quite the amateur artist, so I know that it can be really tough... A lot of people in my life don't understand the point of it—comics don't pay, so why bother? A lot of Christians think it's worthless—something secular can't speak into the lives of anyone. And as an amateur, I am constantly told by others and by my own fears and doubts that maybe I'm just not good enough to do this... To do this art thing, nonetheless to do it for the King of kings.

So I constantly go back to the Word to find out what God really thinks about this, because nothing matters but his opinion of me and purpose for me... And the Bible tells us this: "...for it is God who works in you to will and to act according to his good purpose" (Philippians 2:13).

I've read this paraphrased as this: "For it is God who makes you want to do and able to do his will." If you have been passionate about art, maybe that isn't a mistake. Maybe, just maybe, God put that passion in you. You desire to do it because he wants you to!!! And maybe you're not the best artist, but you're HIS artist. He works in you to make you do exactly what he wants you to do—whatever level you're at now, whatever you're good at, whatever you're weak at... He's given you exactly what you need to do the job now, and he'll give you whatever you need to do the job later. Comparison goes out the window; God gave you unique gifts for a unique job to reach a unique audience.

Furthermore, when anyone tells you that art is secular and God would never use it... Please direct them to Exodus 31. God speaks, "See, I have chosen Bezalel, son of Uri, the son of Hur, of the tribe of Judah, and I have filled him with the Spirit of God, with skill, ability, and knowledge in all kinds of crafts—to make artistic designs..." Artistic gifts are a unique type of gift from God, too!! Don't let anyone try to tell you how worthless it is. God gives you your skill, ability, and knowledge!

What you have is not a mistake. What you desire is not a mistake. If God called you to impact the world with art, you're not less than anyone else. You are insanely gifted and uniquely equipped by God to reach an incredibly unique group of people.

So don't hesitate to do what you feel led to do. Don't be discouraged. Don't give up. Live a life worthy of the calling you have received (Ephesians 4:1).
