I've been working on a case for a while now. The basic premise is a girl is found unconscious next to a dead body in a hotel elevator. The police arrest her. It turns out she can't speak and has no memory. The main cast discovers she was brutally experimented on by the victim, but she's not the killer: a hotel security guard is. The case would get people thinking a about scientific research at the cost of another. One problem I've had is working Brianna's powers into the story. Any advice?

  • That would be fine, but since Briana's powers are going to be a major element of this story, you need to give some hint of them in the first few cases. It will be very jarring to the readers if they have gotten to know this character for a few issues and then you bring in a completely new power set.

Find some way to hint at the fact that she is different and has a secret. That will keep your readers engaged and guessing and it will make the revelation of her powers more satisfying.

  • I think you have a good idea, but I was thinking of doing this as the third or fourth case after the main characters have been somewhat established. I also want the cases to be self-contained (for the most part. Sorry I'm being hard to get along with and can't come up with a single good idea by myself to save my life. :(

Here is something that might work:

If this is her first case, she could be unsure of herself and really want to prove that she is a good investigator. But this case is very confusing and no one has any leads. When she comes up empty handed, her superiors could berate her and say she is unfit to work on the case. That triggers her strong emotions which in turn triggers her shapeshifting powers. She turns into a dog, gets the scent of the real killer, and uses that evidence to solve the case. Since no one knows about her powers, they are confused about how she got the information...but that can be your next story. :)

  • Her emotions

  • Strong negative emotions (like anger or stress) are what cause her involuntary transformations.

If her powers don't trigger voluntarily, what makes them trigger?

Whatever causes it, perhaps she could turn into a dog, then pick up the scent of the real killer. Maybe no one would believe her because there is no way she could have learned that information as a human.

  • It's also worth noting that Brianna won't be able to transform voluntarily for the first few cases.

    Brianna's powers are as follows:

Shapeshifting into animals (but only those with less mass than her)

    Mind reading (slightly)

    Eye for minute details

    Genius-level intelligence

The easiest place to plug them in would be some way to allow Brianna to communicate with the unconscious her.

Can you list all of Brianna's powers here for us?
