  • brian- is it the new Yen Press translation of Azumanga or is it the former ADV version. I haven't compared the two, but i'm interested in knowing how they differentiate.

i don't read many "mainstream comic market" books- i guess i'd define mainstream comics as stuff published by marvel, dc, and some image and dark horse
it's all context, tho. i remember for music, in a christian context, "mainstream" could refer mean "non-Christian" or "secular"- but in a music context it could mean "poplar," "on a major lable," "radio play," or "not indie." i was typically into music that was Christian and independent.

i pretty much read books from dc's minx imprint when i find them at used book stores. most recent- "new york four" and "good as lily" but i find most of that line to be indie comics packaged in a dc format.

i recently read stan sakai's usagi yojimbo: yokai gn and gene yang and derek kirk kim's "the eternal smile"- i'm not sure if those counts as mainstream or not. but they both were really good books.

the new mini marvels collection is really good, as are the dc super friends and tiny titans books.

i also read a fair amount of manga- most of it is published by viz.

also, i've picked some of the recent avengers comics, but mostly for the art of chirs bachalo- which is one of the only reasons i pick up spider-man, x-men, or avengers books nowadays.
  • Is Mouse Guard by Peterson mainstream? Before that I read Hollow Fields by Madeleine Rosca. Most recently read Azumanga Daioh by Kiyohiko Azuma. I wait till all the comics are collected into a book, and then read that. It's easier and doesn't give me 'missing comic syndrome'.
  • The Marvel comic I look forward to seeing each month this year has been "the Wizard of Oz", and "Marvelous Land of Oz" by Eric Shanower and Skottie Young. The stories and art are fantastic. In the non- mainstream, The Flight Antholigies and Amulet are my favorites.
