CHRISTIAN COMIC ARTS SOCIETY :: A NETWORK OF CHRISTIAN FELLOWSHIP FOR COMICS FANS, PROS, AND AMATEURS

Webmangas

Do any of you run webmangas? I'm curious... <smile>

I like to keep up on all the webmangas drawn by Christian artists, and recommend them to my friends, as well as learn from them in hopes of making my own someday, if I team up with an artist and/or learn to draw. :)

So I would love to see everyone's links!

  • Hi! I just joined the community. I'm currently posting my manga project that took 2 1/2 years to create. It covers speculated events of the Biblical David's life before he was anointed. Also he raises a rare heard of sheep: Cloud sheep! Any feedback would be appreciated.

  • Thanks, Meolody!

I actually don't have an RSS feed- i keep my site pretty simple since i've got so many things going on.  But i do updates Monday, Wednesday, and Friday.  You can set your watch to it!

I often alert twitter and facebook when i actually post them, too  @crazygoodconner

  • Hi, Daniel!

I took a look at your comic. You're right, it's not quite manga but it's very unique and fun all the same. :) Do you have an RSS feed?
  • Hey Melody!

I've got a webcomic called Heaven Forbid at my site, www.crazygoodcomics.com

Gene Yang [of American Born chinese and this year's Eisner award winning The Eternal Smile] said,
"[Dan Conner has] an endearing, manga-inspired cartooning style." in regards to it.

I've studied under and worked among some of the best in "American Manga." But at the same time, I don't want to make any claims about how "manga" it is. Many of my techniques come from manga- but at the same time, I've read thousands of American mainstream and indie comics- so i have that influence, too.

a good jump on point is

which was from just a few weeks ago.

I'd be really interested to know what you think about it.
    thanks!
  • Thanks for posting, Justin! I can't tell from the concept art... is it going to be more manga style or classic comic?

Are you going to post it on the web or just publish? :)
  • Hey Melody,

I have not produced any pages for the story yet, but I've just added some concept art for the comic I am working on. It's called "Lightweightz." Check out the following links for more info:

  • Art is cool like that. You can tell who's in it to make millions and who's in it to tell stories because the latter usually make better end products. (with some exceptions to each)

Sure thing. www.holyworlds.org; there is a fantasy forum and a science fiction forum. Both links are on that home page. Jay Lauser runs the site, he organized/invented essence mapping and the Character Fractal System. :)

You'd probably also like it on www.christianfilmmakers.org; filmmaking and comicmaking are very similar arts as far as I've learned. And they discuss theories of art-in-general and stories-in-general quite a bit, which is fascinating.

Yup, I've looked up conlanging a bit. Fascinating art. Very time-consuming. Once I find a purpose for a conlang, I will make one properly. :D I know a guy who's working on a 'lexicon manager' to make it easier but I think the project got put on hold (and I don't know exactly what the program was supposed to do anyhow...). That was on Holy Worlds too; conlanging is a popular topic. :)

@Buzz -- very true. I'm not completely sold on the absence of paper yet, though, because those ebook readers are **so** expensive and then they still want $10 a book on top of that... it sure would be cool if it were cost effective, though! :D
  • There are only about five or six schools in the U.S. (last time I checked, anyway) that offer it. The one I went to was Minneapolis College of Art and Design. And since all of my teachers had worked professionally in the comics market, they warned us at every turn what a difficult market comics could be, so we'd better want to make comics because we have a compulsion to make them, not because we want to get rich making them. But the comics teachers were all fantastic.

Do you have the link for the Christian fantasy forum? I'd be interested in taking a look.

Regarding creating your own language, I know that there are numerous sites dedicated to making your own - conlang, I think the hobby is generally referred to. But then there's also the approach that Peter S. Beagle takes, where he basically just makes it up as he goes along, but still manages to do it in such a way as to convince the reader that he's created an entire internally-consistent, structured language. I've seen a few other people who were able to do that and really make it believable...
  • @Melchizideck -- thanks for the link! I think I've seen your site before, I think I had a link from The Project or Christianmanga.com. :)

    @Devin

Wow, I didn't even know you could get a degree in that. lol... I also didn't know that college had dire warnings included.

    Ahhh, okay. That makes sense.

I hang out on a Christian fantasy writers' forum which is full of ideas on how to get around the cliche elves/dragons. You might want to hang out there sometime. :)

Eragon -- and the Christian copy-cats thereof -- annoys me greatly. However, I do like dragons. In proper setting. And moderation. Without mindspeaking, since after Eragon it wasn't fun anymore.

And someday I want to write my own elvish language... but it just won't be so cool because I could not possibly beat Quenya/Sindarin.
