CHRISTIAN COMIC ARTS SOCIETY :: A NETWORK OF CHRISTIAN FELLOWSHIP FOR COMICS FANS, PROS, AND AMATEURS

Probably a dumb question...

My question is:
As people of faith and as artists wanting to learn more about the art, is it okay to take life drawing courses (IE: Drawing naked people).  Is it one of those "don't cause a brother to stumble" or "if it's not something that temps you, go for it"
Thoughts?

  • I grow up in Malaysia, a Muslim country, but I'm a Christian. No nude art class is allowed in my country. As an artist I still manage to draw human figure quite well.
I don't think it is a necessity but it is able to bring great benefits for an artist to know human body more better. If you feel tempted to nude live model try to draw from a picture first.
I believe your love for art will overcome your lust, because your love for art are given by God but your lust are just your sinful flesh trying to be your master.
Let the holy spirit be your master and let your flesh be your servant. God Bless you bro.
  • You all will be happy to know I signed up for a life drawing class last week. So far this week I have had two nights of the class.
Sven Jacobs - yes I am considering celibacy after just two sessions of the class. Never would I have thought (or even wanted to) that a "model" could more or less apply to just anyone.
I am learning, even after just two sessions. I'm kinda excited I'm actually learning how to make it all work and look good.
  • I'm afraid this is not something that others can decide for you. Only you know those areas of weakness and temptation in your life and if lust is one of them, then this might be a challenge for you.

But truth be told as someone who took his share of life drawing classes in college, it's not something that ever seemed titalating to me...and I was easily titilated at that age (lol)! And if your serious about learning to draw the human figure, unfortunatly that will involve seeing them without covering.
  • Wow.
I actually didn't think anyone would respond to this.
Thanks for the advice people. I think after hearing these replies I might check out some life drawing courses. I do want to be the best artist I can be for God, and more and more people are saying I need life drawing courses. So it looks like I might have to.
  • I've taught figure drawing classes for years at the Kubert School, but I don't advertise that fact, for the very reason that I don't want to make anyone stumble. And we've had youthful models, male and female, who were in superb shape (and some who weren't, but it's good to draw all types). Again, what God calls for, He provides for (and gives the necessary grace for). If that grace weren't available, then there could be no Christian proctologists, gynecologists, and such like. There is grace, professionalism, and maturity, without which, one should stay aware from such areas that would tempt him/her.

It is necessary for the study of the figure in 3 dimensional space to draw them robed and disrobed (though I don't display the latter drawings publicly for the sake of weaker brethren).
  • I don't know what Life Drawing classes you plan to take, but the people in my life drawing classes made me horribly interested in lifelong celibacy.

    JUST SAYIN'.
