CHRISTIAN COMIC ARTS SOCIETY :: A NETWORK OF CHRISTIAN FELLOWSHIP FOR COMICS FANS, PROS, AND AMATEURS
Okay, I have a confession to make: I have a MASSIVE obsession with the Ace Attorney games right now. I really enjoy the unique cases, well-written characters and even some of the humor. I've noticed a problem, though, some of the case ideas and plot lines have been seeping into my series. I've noticed case plot lines from Manimal, NCIS, and Danganronpa working their way in, too. Any advice? (and just to clarify, I'm thinking about NOT watching any more of Danganronpa because I find the excecution scenes unbearable to watch; other than that I really enjoy it).

  • I wouldn't worry too much right now about influences seeping into your story. It's a part of the process as a writer. You're still learning, and there's a lot you can learn from other people's works. Over time, you'll have so many "influences" that what comes about as a result is it's own thing, a patchwork quilt of things you like. Just have fun and practice. :)

  • I've only played a demo for it, but I love Phonix Wright too.

If you show another fan of the show/book/game your work and see of they recognize it.

If they do, then add or subtract until it seems original. (If not, your good.)

I base little details off of Final Fantasy charactors, and that's what I do. I hope this helps!! : )

  • It's a good question, I'm curious to hear what others have to say. I know I've scrapped jokes (and re-written punchlines) if, after thinking about it, I thought I'd read the joke before. With plots, I suppose it depends somewhat on how unique the concept is? Is it a common theme or something very specific. Again, I'm curious to hear what others have to say.
