My guess is that things are going to change no matter what. Right now we've got a convention that sells out months early and even exhibitor tables sell out, what- over six months early- let alone that artist's alley is mostly made up of high level professional talent. it can be very hard for the little man to get involved. it's at a point where there really isn't room to grow, except out- to other hotels and such. and who wants something which is doomed to not grow? (with the exception that it is too big to begin with...) or, what i would love, is if they moved artist's alley and the comic publishers & dealers to a hotel ballroom and left all the tv networks at the convention center. that's a con i'd like to go to!
my guess is that if the location changes, various elements will change. it just won't be as easy to change plans people have had for years and everyone go to an unfamiliar city- let alone in essence, a new convention.
with the numbers being capped, what's going to happen? year after year it selling out earlier and earlier? that means there are that many more people who can't go- and that isn't good for the san diego economy, either.
that or give it a decade and see if the demand is still growing. i guess it depends- if they continue to sponsor non comic events and movie/tv stuff- then it will probably continue to grow- especially on that side. if it was all about comics- then it would be more of the size of wonder con- which is pretty much all about comics and has no major hollywood attractions- and the attendance is a fraction of the size.
or they could do it two weeks- have a movie and tv week and a comic week. i know which week i would go to...
I have talked to CCI organizers and there seems to a lot of talk about moving. Their statements have been "IF" we're in San Diego next year. For us of the CCAS, who live in Southern California, the move would definitely save us a load of money in hotel expenses. I agree with Buzz about the L.A. Convention Center. A few blocks in the wrong direction and attendees unfamiliar with the area, could find themselves in "skuzzy" neighborhoods. A Klingon would find himself in danger in Skid Row, which is only a few block away, a much shorter distance than from the San Diego convention center to the food court where we eat.
Anaheim, though sprawling, is more family friendly and safer. We will know in shortly, considering the Con is only a few weeks away. Our traditional Spiritual Themes in Comics and Sunday Meeting of the CCAS has been moved out of the convention center, into on of the adjoining hotels due to an oversight by the organizers. It will be interesting to see how this plays out over the next several weeks. Thanks for the update Robert.
