Sorry I haven't been active much. I've been taking a screenwriting class and that's taken up a lot of my time. Anyway, any advice on how to show my main character of,y comic book struggling with her faith without the story being too preachy. After all, struggles with faith is something all Christians must deal with, but how do I portray that?

  • Thanks! I ended up dropping out of the class because it was too stressful.

Hi K.G, I hope screenwriting is going well--that sounds like an interesting class!

I agree with Brien's advice. It may also be beneficial to think about your own experiences. Consider how the kinds of authentic struggles you face in your own life regarding faith can relate to the kinds of struggles your character will face. Talk to other Christians and learn about their own struggles.
If the character and the story are treated in an authentic way, I think you can avoid the sense of "an artificial life" being lived.

    Hope this helps a bit!

Important to complete Step 1 & 2 before doing step 3:

Step 1: strive to walk as close to your Lord as possible. Write as often as you can without waiting to be "in the mood." Some of your best writing will come during times of stress, depression or frustration.

Step2: At the intersection of faith, love and writing, day by day, you will get story ideas.  Half of them you will like well enough to outline,  but only a few of those written ideas will be so good that you want to keep coming back to work on them. If you are 'hooked' by your story, chances are pretty good that others will be as well.

Step3: In a good story, your character and setting will have a "voice" that will make spiritual ideas and statements come naturally...or not. Your story could have a life and death situation that will make a certain spiritual conversation come naturally or not.

    Happy writing and Happy Easter!
