Check out Mark Kriley, an American mangaka. He also does instructional videos on Youtube. I haven't read his stuff, but I know he does Japanese style comics. Ben Dunn of Antarctic Press is another American born artist who does Japanese style animation (he is secular). So, you don't HAVE to move to Japan to do stuff. But, if you go then I wish you the best.
You know, I read an article about a english speaker that learned japanese and worked in japan. He said the animation work was 5 days a week and every other saturday. So, that dream is possible. It would just take a lot of hard work.
