A Good Villain

In most of the books that I have read in my 33 year lifespan, I can always envision a way for the hero to end his/her plight with the villain. I beleive that a good villain has to not be unbeatable, but so crafty that it pushes the hero to stretch to their best to defeat them. Magneto was perfect at this. Not only was he the force opposing the vision of Carles Xaviers dream, but he was also a fellow mutant and so understood Charles' reasoning. Making it very difficult at times past for Professor X to fully "go in" on him. Cunning, coupled with power in the opponent will force the best of morality and strength. What does anyone else think?
