Nude art and Christianity

As an artist, must learn to draw anatomy and the human figure. One of the ways to draw it is to learn to draw from life, including drawing nude figures. I have been studying nude figures from photographs like the ones in http://www.fineartnude.com/ ( you must be 18 to get into this site and must not have a problem with lust), though I have not drawn from a real life model face to face. The nudes in this site are artistically and tastefully done. In an artist's standards, they are not porn.Matthew 5: 28 says " Anyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart". So as long as we don't think of anything naughty while studying nude figures is okay. A good illustration would be a Christian doctor or a male Christian gynecologist to be more specific. Would it be a sin if this doctor will look at a woman's private parts but not think of any lustful things? I mean it's a profession, right? Someone has to do it.Well that's what I think. What do you guys think? So if anyone out there who has opinions, violent reactions, or simply just wanna ban me from CCAS is welcome to join this discussion.

  • Well, if you are THE artist and drawing such images, you have to think, are you drawing this for you or others, if for others, will you cause them to stumble? Is your mind strong enough to withstand the possible allure? What of others? For learning process, I say ok, but, you can throw it out there to where others can take and twist it, it's a matter of spiritual discernment really. Now, you can be modest and make the human anatomy beautiful as well, wisdom and judgment on the part of the artist yourself, is what matters, take it to God and would Jesus be pleased with what you've done? Some things to think on, but with the link above, there is a single photo in there of two women in an erotic pose with each other, that can cause a downfall of a man or woman who's trying to deal with porn issues, or others- it's all by the heart, all about the heart and how strong it is. Pray upon what you do before drawing such things.

    God Bless

    • I find that there is no need to look at nude figures to learn anatomy. I start with a basic stick figure skeleton and build around it. I use comics and sports magazines as referances of muscles, poses and clothing.

The only reason to study the nude figure, is to DRAW the nude figure.

I find it harder to draw clothing with the correct wrinkles, so thats what I study.

I also model myself in the mirror for poses and angles. I even take pictures of my hands and feet for certain shots. No lust issues there.

If you feel you need more referance for anatomical correctness ( such as flexing muscles or interaction with props) , ask your mom, dad, brother or sister to model ( with clothes on of course). Learn to exagerate body proportions as needed to fit the character) I assure you, you won't have lust issues with that.

Again, the only reason to study the nude figure, is to DRAW the nude figure.

Now, portraying nudity ( such as Adam and Eve in the garden) is a whole different topic but can be done tastefully with some strategically well placed landscapes and shrubs.

Even tho many doctors do their job without lusting there are many that probably still struggle with lust issues. Its best not to put yourself in a situation in which you might fall.
  • most of the arrt books i've found lack the fine details that make the human body so alluring. then again i don't use them much. i think the hardest thing has been the costume books, be it for manga or american comics there is some weird clothing out there.
  • The first question I have is where do you draw the line. Some could rationalize looking at porn and say that I do not feel lust so I am ok. Where does art cross the boundary of just displaying a woman's or man's body to become pornographic? Being a single man in my 30's, I understand the allure of lust. Before I returned to Christ, well like many others I fell in to some common traps. When I joined this sight I asked a question about drawing anatomy without nudity and it was suggested bathing suits (some of those do not leave much to imagine) and to draw from TV. I guess it is a fine line to walk, for me it is too fine and so I try to stay away from it. I am finding I am recalling Proverbs 5:18-20.
